Samantha Barnhart

Samantha Barnhart of Butler recently won a first-place award in the 2017 Student Keystone Press Awards.

A senior English writing major at Indiana (Pa.) University, Barnhart received the award in the Editorial category of the competition for Division I, which includes four-year colleges and universities with enrollments of 10,000 or more.

Barnhart is editor-in-chief of The Penn, IUP’s student newspaper. She is the daughter of Janice and Roger Barnhart of Butler and the granddaughter of May and Clyde Tantlinger of Butler.

The Penn also won first place in Ongoing News Coverage for reporting on the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties (APSCUF) strike in October.

The Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association (PNA) sponsors the annual competition.

The winners will be honored April 12 at a luncheon during the America East Media Business & Technology Conference in Hershey.

BATON ROUGE, La. — Heather Porter of West Sunbury was initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi at Lock Haven University.

ELMIRA, N.Y. — Elijah Butler of Worthington was inducted into the Elmira College chapter of Phi Alpha Theta National History Honor Society.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Alexis Lintz of Saxonburg was named to the Golden Key International Honor Society at Youngstown State University. She is a presocial work major at the university.

Freeport High School and Freeport Middle School recently participated in the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science competition at Slippery Rock University.

High school students Nicholas Mattivi, Alex Kladny and Isabelle Lindsay received perfect scores.

The following high school students received first-place awards and qualified for the state meet at Penn State University in May:

Nathan Cristello, Liam Dress, Jordan Fischer, Anastazia Herbst, Rebecca Hollobaugh, Brett Jones, David Kinniburgh, Eli Lindsay, Michaela Mattivi, Jack McCoy, Isabella Parks, Caitlyn Pascucci, Sydney Pastorek, Madison Ravotti, Rebecca Reese, Lurena Stewart, Anthony Swierkosz and John Zurisko.

Emily Huff received a second place award.

Three students received special awards for their projects. David Kinniburgh received The Director’s Award for the best high school ecology project. Alex Kladny received The Director’s Award for the best high school physics project. Isabelle Lindsay received the Go Green Award from the Marcellus Shale Outreach Foundation.

Middle school students Anuj Lele and Gary Seger received perfect scores.

The following middle school students received first place awards and qualified for the state meet at Penn State University in May:

Hanna Brenneman, Blake Caponi, Maggie Hollobaugh, Lucas Jones, Robby Kladny, Alex Legin, Cassidy Wolff and Mackenzie Wolff.

Amanda Huff and Loryn Henry received second place awards.

Two students received special awards for their projects. Anuj Lele received The Director’s Award for the best middle school engineering project and an honorable mention from the Marcellus Shell Outreach Foundation for his work in ecology. Gary Seger received the Ernst P. Hall award for his work in ecology.
