Urvi Gupta

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — Dominic Oliver of Butler, formerly a student at Shady Side Academy and now a student at Wesleyan University, was honored for his excellence in the classroom when the New England Small College Athletic Conference announced its 2016-17 Winter All-Academic Team.

Oliver is a member of the men’s ice hockey team at Wesleyan University.

INDIANA, Pa. — Tristen Borlano of Butler was selected for the Sutton Scholars academic achievement scholarship program at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

He was chosen following an on-campus competitive interview process. The scholarship can be renewed for four years of study.

He is the son of Robert and Vicki Borlano and a senior at Slippery Rock High School. Borlano is the marching band section leader and captain of the wrestling team. He plans to major in criminology at IUP.

JACKSON TWP — Urvi Gupta, a Seneca Valley High School senior, was named the recipient of awards and scholarships from several well-known national organizations.

For demonstrating leadership and dedication to her community, Gupta was named a 2017 Coca-Cola Scholar. Out of nearly 100,000 applicants, only 150 students in the nation earned the designation.

The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation is one of the largest corporate-sponsored, achievement-based scholarship programs of its kind in the United States.

The National Center for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT) chose Gupta as a 2017 Western and Central Pennsylvania and West Virginia Affiliate winner of the NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing. The award recognized her computing-related aspirations, aptitudes and interest in information technology/computing.

Gupta qualified as a 2017 Recognized Carson Scholar for her continued academic and humanitarian achievements. She also was honored as a Carson Scholar during the 2015-16 school year and received a scholarship.

She is the daughter of Rajeev and Minoo Gupta. She aspires to have a career in a science field, particularly in medicine.

Gupta has competed in many STEM-related competitions and is a peer tutor. Her greatest technical accomplishment to date has been her creation of a plant-powered oxygen fuel cell.

CHERRY TWP — The Moniteau High School Academic Decathlon team recently came in second of eight schools in the small school division of the Pennsylvania Academic Decathlon State Competition. The team also won eighth place overall in the state competition. Eighteen schools from western, central and eastern Pennsylvania participated.

Moniteau’s roster includes Sophia Hilton, Sydnee Buczkowski and Ethan Kummer for the honors division; Halie Christy,Amelia Brown andTyler Bowser for the scholastic division; and Tyler Steele for the varsity division.

The students competed for two days in 10 events.

Sophia Hilton won gold in science and silver in art.

Sydnee Buczkowski won gold in art, gold in literature, bronze in economics, bronze in music and bronze in speech.

Ethan Kummer won silver in economics, silver in literature and bronze in social science

Halie Christy won silver in economics, bronze in literature and bronze in science.

Amelia Brown won gold in music.

Tyler Steele won silver in social science, silver in literature and bronze in math.

Tyler Bowser was unable to attend the state competition.

The team coach is Ken Cloonan.

JACKSON TWP — The Seneca Valley Academic Decathlon team placed fifth among eighteen other schools from western, central and eastern Pennsylvania in the Academic Decathlon State Competition. The team competed in the large school division for two days in 10 events.

Sophomore Rishin Sharma won in speech. Senior Kyle Cindrich and juniors Caleb Newman and Sean Duncan all won in interview.

The Seneca Valley Academic Decathlon State Team includes Rishin Sharma, Kyle Cindrich, Megan Neely, Matthew Beggy, Caleb Newman, Caitlin Bliss, Rebecca Carlini, Colin Domowicz and Sean Duncan.

The team coach is David Reichard.

JACKSON TWP — Twelve Seneca Valley students received Gold Keys in the 2017 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards Competition.

They include Zofia Chrzanowska, Katherine Fronczak, Lucy Geronime, Ella Lunney, Lindsey Ocheltree, Amelia Reese, Jiana Schemm, Parker Zaras, Anna Sullivan, Jack Reynolds, Rachel Palaski and Kelsey Hilliard.

The Seneca Valley Silver Key winners were Reece Basehore, Kelly Cannon, Gracie Carothers, Katherine Fronczak, Lucy Geronime, Anupama Jayachandran, Joseph Koromaus, Sarah Kosakowski, Sydney Long, Blake Mercer, Krist Munoz, Sierra Myers, Erin Piotrowski, Amelia Reese, Anna Stewart, Peyton Turner, Zofia Chrzanowska, Savanna David, Maggie Hillebrand, Mia Moretti, Lauren Podelec, Joe Koromaus, Jack Reynolds and Rachel Palaski.

Honorable Mention recipients were Alex Blakely, Brooke Boltz, Kelly Cannon, Gracie Carothers, Katherine Fronczak, Maurcus Fullenweider, Lucy Geronime, Joey Goist, Hung Ha, Kara McStay, Krist Munoz, Sierra Myers, Lyndsey Ocheltree, Shelby Perry, Erin Piotrowski, Lauren Podelec, Mordecai Richter, Peyton Turner, Emily Ussia, Sydney Long, Maria Alfano, Laura Hilliard, Sydney Long, Sierra Myers, Noelle Sadaka, Anna Stewart, Jessica Pollaci and Julia Divoky.

Seneca Valley’s secondary art teachers include Jason Woolslare, Megan Bonistalli, Jason Shorr, Aaron Shafer and Tabatha Karman.

The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards provide a recognition initiative for creative teens, and are billed as the largest source of scholarships for young artists and writers.

JACKSON TWP — Four Seneca Valley students won awards in the regional level of the 2017 National History Day competition at Westminster College.

Seventh grade student Veronica Pimenova won second place in the Junior Documentary Division. Eighth grade student Benaifer Sepai won first place in the Junior Exhibit Division and eighth-grade student Annie Castagnero won second place in the Junior Exhibit Division. Freshman Caelen Blakely won third place in the Senior Exhibit Division.

The students wrote process papers and created visual exhibits depicting a person or group who took a stand in history.
