Rachel Konieczny

BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — Rachel Konieczny, a journalism and mass communication major and a cross-country team veteran from Butler, was one of 30 students from 18 universities selected for a prestigious summer fellowship with Carnegie-Knight News21.

Carnegie-Knight News21 is a national reporting initiative headquartered at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University. The program gives top journalism students the opportunity to report and produce in-depth, multimedia projects for major media outlets.

Konieczny is a senior at St. Bonaventure University and the daughter of Matt and Patty Konieczny.

For two years, Konieczny was the beat reporter and photographer for Duquesne men's basketball for the online sports site Pittsburgh Sporting News. At St. Bonaventure, she is the photo editor at The Bona Venture student-run newspaper. She also is the communications coordinator at University Ministries.

INDIANA, Pa. — Kusuma Anand, who is from Slippery Rock and is a biology major at Indiana (Pa.) University, received a graduate student third-place award in a poster competition for women scientists during the university's Research Appreciation Week.

Her poster presentation was “The Importance of Gender and Reward Contingencies in Auditory Discrimination Tasks for the Zebra Finch.”

Anand was among 45 students whose posters were judged by a panel of IUP faculty.

ANNVILLE — Lauren Decker of Grove City, was inducted into Phi Alpha Epsilon, the college honor society celebrating academic achievement and volunteer service.

Decker, a graduate of Grove City High School, is pursuing a bachelor's degree in health science at Lebanon Valley College.

JACKSON TWP — Michael Beggy, Anna Feng, Nishant Jayachandran, Bailey Salameh, Sean Scott, Jake Stebbins and Drew Vlasnik, students at Seneca Valley Intermediate High School, were on a team that recently participated in the Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Math and Science (TEAMS) competition. The team ranked second in their division in Pennsylvania and qualified for the national competition.

The competition included applied engineering problems. The team also received a design task and equipment and then had to build and test their design to earn points.

JACKSON TWP — Mariah Harvin, a sophomore at Seneca Valley Intermediate High School, will serve as a delegate of the Congress of Future Science and Technology Leaders in Lowell, Massachusetts, in June.The Congress is an honors-only program for high school students who are passionate about science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM). The event motivates them for careers in these areas and provides resources to help them reach their goal.Harvin and students from across the country will learn about leading scientific research, cutting-edge advances and the future of science and technology.Harvin was nominated by John C. Mather, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics and science director of the National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologists, based on her academic achievement, leadership potential and passion for science and technology.———SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock American Legion Post 393 and Auxiliary Unit 393 honored Slippery Rock Elementary and Middle School students at the annual American Legion birthday dinner.American Legion Unit 393 sponsored an Americanism Essay Contest to promote patriotism in the community.The class II winners were Collin Wimer, first place; Sarah Baker, second place; and Ezra Allen, third place.The class III winners were Alyssa Olshanski, first place; Reagan Suorsa, second place; and Adeline Lasko, third place.The winners read their essays at the dinner and received certificates and monetary awards.Also honored at the dinner were Isabelle Willison, who was named the outstanding eighth-grade girl, and Colin Cypher, who was named as the outstanding eighth-grade boy.They were chosen by their teachers as students who show outstanding qualities in honor, courage, scholarship, leadership, service and Americanism. During the Memorial Day service at Slippery Rock Cemetery, Colin Cypher will recite the Gettysburg Address, and Isabelle Willison will recite “In Flanders Fields.”
