SLIPPERY ROCK— Slippery Rock University is ranked fifth in the Learfield Sports Directors Cup national all-sports standings as of Dec. 11.

The Rock scored 210 points in the fall, 102 fewer than first-place Grand Valley State (Mich.). Grand Valley has 312 points, followed by Massachusetts-Lowell with 241, Tampa (Fla.) 231, Metropolitan State (Colo.) 217 and SRU.

Points are awarded based on a school's national finish and are weighted according to the number of schools participating in that NCAADivision IIsport.

CHERRY TWP — Due to a scheduling conflict, Saturday's Slippery Rock at Moniteau boys basketball game, scheduled for 7:30 p.m., was postponed.No makeup date was immediately announced.

• SYRACUSE, N.Y. — New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator Doug Marrone was hired as coach at Syracuse, returning to the school where he played to try to rebuild a program that hasn't had a winning season since 2001.Marrone was a captain and three-year letterman at Syracuse in the mid-1980s, and the school said he will succeed Greg Robinson, who was fired last month after going 10-37 in four seasons.• BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — Bowling Green hired Dave Clawson, who spent the past season as Tennessee's offensive coordinator, to be its head football coach Friday.Much of Clawson's success came in the Football Championship Subdivision, where he was coach at Richmond and Fordham and twice won coach of the year honors. He led Richmond to the national semifinals in 2007.• WEST POINT, N.Y. — Army football coach Stan Brock was fired Friday, six days after the Black Knights were soundly beaten by archrival Navy.Brock was 6-18 record in two years, going 3-9 each season.

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. — Watkins Glen International needs a title sponsor for its NASCAR Sprint Cup race after Centurion Boats opted out of the final year of its contract.Company officials said the decision was based on the downturn in the national economy. Centurion spokesman Les Clark said the company has cut production 50 percent and laid off half its work force at its North Carolina manufacturing facility."The economy is not going to make this easy. It is having an effect on our sport; it's going to have an effect on our year. These are tough times," Watkins Glen International president Craig Rust said Friday. "I don't think we ever expected it to get this bad. I haven't seen it this bad in sports from a sponsorship standpoint in a long time."
