Bernice Perry Williams

Bernice Perry Williams, 94, of Good Samaritan Hospice, Cabot, died at 1:50 p.m. Monday at Good Samaritan Hospice.

Born Feb. 2, 1914, in Clarksburg, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late James Arthur Perry and the late Florence Gray Perry.

Mrs. Williams was an educator for the Butler schools.

She was a member of the Hill United Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder.

She held a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from Heidelberg College, Tiffin, Ohio. She attended Slippery Rock College for elementary certification. Mrs. Williams earned a Master's of Education from the University of Pittsburgh. She was a teacher and elementary principal for 37 years for the Butler School District at the Emily Brittain, Oakland and Clearfield schools.

She was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy for 2Z\x years, where she qualified as an instructor in celestial navigation, which was used prior to the invention of radar. Her interest in navigation led her to getting her pilot's license.

She was past commander of the all women's post, Jean E. Parker Post 842 of the American Legion. She also was a member of the American Legion Post 778, past president of the Soroptomist Club, past president of the Lambda Chapter Delta Kappa Gamma, a life member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association, and a life member of the National Education Association.

Mrs. Williams is survived by one sister, Mrs. Joan Gregg of Butler; two nephews, Gary Gregg and his wife, Mary, and Jeffrey Gregg, both of Butler; two nieces, Barbara Kennedy of Rochester, N.Y., and Sally and her husband, Howard Mehringer, of Belington, W.Va.; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Mrs. Williams was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Louise Kennedy.

<B>WILLIAMS</B> — Memorial services for Bernice Perry Williams, who died Monday, Sept. 29, 2008, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Hill United Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Clark Sawyer of Hill United Presbyterian Church officiating.Officers and members of VFW Post 249 and American Legion Post 778 of Lyndora will conduct military services at the church.Contributions may be made to Meals on Wheels, 218 E.
