Half-a-kilometer: Fundraiser puts a new spin on fun run
An upcoming fun run by the Butler YWCA is all about participation, according to its executive director, Elizabeth Short.
Short said the idea for the Turtle Trot came from a nonprofit in the Midwest, and she and the YWCA staff are adapting the half-kilometer walk into an event that can be enjoyed by anyone and everyone who is interested. It is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17.
While there are some challenges for people to take on along the route, Short said the goal of the Turtle Trot is “to not break a sweat.”
“We have created stations throughout the course for people to enjoy and stretch things out as they go along,” Short said. “One of my favorites is something we're calling the armchair athlete station. There is a football toss, hockey slap shot game — but you're going to have to do it seated in an armchair.”
This is the first time the Butler YWCA is hosting the Turtle Trot, but Short said she hopes the event’s simplicity will attract enough attention to make it a recurring occasion in Butler.
While the walk is meant to be easy and fun, Short said people can add to the festivities by wearing costumes, because the best costumes will earn awards.
“We're having a costume contest, and we're giving a prize to best individual and best group costume,” she said. “We hope to get the creative juices flowing.”
Walkers will depart from the starting line every 15 minutes, Short said, so everyone will have time to enjoy each station on the route. Like any walk or fun run event, the Turtle Trot will have rewards at the finish line, including sweet drinks for all, and beer for adults.
Short said the money from the trot will be used to fund YWCA programs that support community needs.
“Project Period which distributes period projects to people in need, schools,” Short said, “and Getting Ahead which is a 16-week program for people living in poverty.”
Registration for the Turtle Trot costs $20 at www.ywcabutler.org.
