Joan G. Sherman, 78, of Slippery Rock, passed away at UPMC Jameson in New Castle on Friday, Sept. 8, 2023.

Joan was born in Butler on March 13, 1945, and was the daughter to Richard Shay and Mildred Hilgar Shay. She married Robert Sherman on March 20, 1965. Joan graduated from Butler High School in 1962.

Throughout her life, Joan worked at various jobs. She ran a produce stand; sold clothes at the Four Season’s in Grove City and helped her husband run his welding shop in Slippery Rock.

The job she most loved was delivering mail; she worked as a U.S. Mail Postal Carrier beginning in 1996. She could listen to her KDKA radio station without any interruptions, delivering packages and mail along her route.

In 2015, she reluctantly retired at the age of 70 due to health concerns.

Summer was her favorite season. You could see Joan mowing her yard, tending to her flowers and sitting on her porch. She loved going out to eat with her cousin, Judy, husband, Bob, and Judy’s husband, Jim, to Grantham’s Landing in Sandy Lake, Pa. She enjoyed shopping at Boscov’s in Butler.

Survivors include her husband, Robert; two daughters, Lynette (Jeffery Forren) Sherman of Covington, Va., and Shari (Scott) Kreutz of Slippery Rock; four granddaughters, Brogan (Shane) Urey of Grove City, Rhiannon (Eli) Rutter of Raeford, N.C., Kennedy (Payne Chafin) Kreutz of Morgantown, W.Va., and Jordyn Kreutz (Cam Wyant) of New Castle; three great-grandsons, Case, Cohen and Ledger; a cousin who was like a sister, Judy (Jim) Hancock; as well as cousins and nieces.

SHERMAN — The family of Joan G. Sherman, who died Friday, Sept. 8, 2023, will receive friends from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Pastor Dave Maitland of the first Baptist Church of Butler presiding.

Interment will be in West Sunbury Union Cemetery.
