Fire in Jefferson residence contained to the chimney
JEFFERSON TWP — Firefighters on Tuesday morning kept a chimney fire from spreading to the rest of a house on Bullcreek Road.
Capt. Paul Harrity of the Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Company said Tuesday something ignited inside the chimney.
Harrity said the chimney had last been used Sunday.
One of the home's occupants, Chester "Corky" Rosenberger, was resting when he smelled smoke and went outside.
"There were flames shooting out of the chimney," Rosenberger said.
He grabbed the cat, which hid in the woods while crews fought the fire, from inside.
No one was injured. The one-story house, which has an attic, is insured.
After receiving the 9:33 a.m. 911 call, about 20 firefighters responded to the fire at 160 Bullcreek Road.
Harrity said crews doused the blaze in minutes.
Rosenberger's roommate, Valarie Kelly, was at work when the fire broke out.
She was grateful for the firefighters prompt arrival.
"Thanks for keeping my house from burning down," Kelly told Harrity.
Harrity said Kelly and Rosenberger would probably be able to stay in the house if they can tolerate the odor.
A damage estimate was unavailable Tuesday morning.
Harrity said Tuesday's fire is a reminder for people to replace chimney flue liners and to sweep chimneys periodically.
