Jimmie R. Jackson
Jimmie R. Jackson, 82, of Freeport passed away peacefully on Wednesday, at the Good Samaritan Hospice Unit at Concordia in Cabot.
Jimmie lived in North Carolina for most of his life. He moved to Freeport to be closer to his daughter and granddaughters.
Jimmie was born in Sampson County, N.C., on May 17, 1935. He was the son of the late Pearle Jane (Daniel) and Ernie Jackson.
He was the husband of Alberta (Madewell) Jackson, who passed away in 2011.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Jimmie was a tank driver with the 22nd Armored Field Artillery Battalion's Battery A. He was part of the Desert Rock VI program. He was witness to the atomic testing and then moved to “Ground Zero” as part of the tactical armored task force.
After the war, Jimmie worked as a switching station supervisor for the old GTE Phone Co., now Verizon, for 30 years, retiring in 1986.
He attended Freeport United Methodist Church.
Jimmie was a member of the Palmyra Lodge 147, AF & AM Masonic Lodge and the American Legion, both in Dunn, N.C.
He enjoyed playing bingo, watching western movies, watching Pittsburgh sports and talking to family and friends on the telephone.
Jimmie is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Tim Watt of Freeport; his son, Steve Jackson of Orlando, Fla.; two granddaughters, Caitlin (Jake) Lauer and Kristen Watt; his sister, Magdalene West of Dunn, N.C.; two brothers, Jack (Vonncile) Jackson of Greensboro, N.C.; Robert Jackson of Greensboro, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his three brothers, Quentin, George, E. B. and Bruce Jackson; two sisters, Ellengray Burrlon and Trello Sills.
JACKSON — Family and friends of Jimmie R.
