Events set to draw people

Jeep festival, Spring Fest & ride slated

There’s a lot to see and do in Butler County this weekend as the county is host to numerous events expected to draw large crowds.

“We’re hoping for tens of thousands,” said Jack Cohen, president of the Butler County Tourism and Convention Bureau.

The fifth annual Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival at Cooper’s Lake Campground in Worth Township may be the biggest draw of them all, but the Harmony Spring Fest and a bicycle ride for multiple sclerosis are also expected to attract large crowds.

“To see all these things come into the county, it’s really cool to watch,” Cohen said.

The Jeep festival at Cooper’s Lake will run Friday through Sunday, and will feature a Jeep parade Friday afternoon from Butler County Community College to downtown Butler.

Thousands of people have attended the Jeep event during its first four years, and organizers are hoping this year will be the largest one yet.

While many Jeep enthusiasts will use the nearby Moraine State Park as a place to camp for the weekend, the park also has another key event Saturday morning.

The PA Keystone Chapter of the National MS Society will begin its 30th anniversary ride of Bike MS: Escape to the Lake event at the park early Saturday morning.

More than 1,200 cyclists will be riding 150 miles to Erie to raise money and awareness for the fight against multiple sclerosis.

The cyclists are expecting to raise $1 million for research and services.

South of the Jeep and bike events will be an attraction in Harmony.

The borough’s Spring Fest will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. It will feature a Fiber Arts Festival and a Herb and Garden Fair.

The event will bring numerous vendors and activities into the community, and will feature live music.

Cohen said the three events highlight what the tourism bureau seeks to accomplish.

“We try to generate revenue in the county by having people stay in our hotels, shop at our stores and eat at our restaurants,” he said.

Cohen said he hopes the excitement of the weekend will carry into the following week when Mars borough hosts its Mars New Year event.

That’s another event Cohen said the county is lucky to have.

“How cool is it they are bringing NASA in,” he said. “That’s something you would expect to be in a big city. It’s a great time to draw people into our communities.”
