Junior Miss is chosen
A Karns City High School student was named Butler County Junior Miss 2007 during the annual scholarship competition held Saturday at Butler Intermediate High School.
Jessica Spafford, daughter of James and Regina Spafford of Chicora, won the title, competing against 13 other contestants in the categories of interview, scholastic achievement, fitness, self-expression, talent and spirit.
Spafford was awarded a $5,000 scholarship with her title. She was also awarded several other scholarships for taking top position in the interview, scholastic, self-expression and talent categories. For her talent, she did a vocal performance to "Poor Wandering One" from "Pirates of Penzance."
In addition to receiving scholarship funds, Spafford will proceed to the state pageant, set for Jan. 7 in Johnstown.
The first runner-up was Courtney Kerr, daughter of George and Catherine Kerr of Butler. A Butler High School student, she received a $1,500 scholarship. She also received two $100 awards for top fundraising and ticket sales.Second runner-up was Knoch High School student Jessica McCafferty. The daughter of Joseph and Joanne McCafferty of Butler, she received a $1,000 scholarship. She also received an award for scholastic achievement.Winners in other categories included Knoch High School students Meagan Macurdy, who won in the fitness category; and Megan Flannery, who won in the spirit category.
Other competitors included Gretchen Adler and Kady Schorr, both of Knoch High School; Elizabeth Bartley of Mars High School; Rebecca Bowser of Moniteau High School; Alayna Carroll, Emily Graham and Katelyn Gruver, all of Butler High School; Bria Nelko of Seneca Valley High School; and Alyssa Smaldino of Shady Side Academy.
