WESTERVILLE, Ohio — Otterbein University public relations and communication studies major Brian Hammel was selected for a national subcommittee that connects Public Relations Student Society of America chapters from the region. He is a senior and is the Otterbein PRSSA chapter president.
Hammel, of Butler, is a graduate of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart High School.
He is responsible for communication with the PRSSA chapters in the extended Pennsylvania region. He is a resource for chapter presidents and members.
The first-of-its-kind regional ambassador program includes 15 pre-professionals nationwide.

KARNS CITY — Karns City High School students were introduced recently to The Challenge Program during a school assembly that included information about success in and beyond the classroom, career-readiness, and local career opportunities.
Five juniors and five seniors received awards for the work they accomplished during the 2016-17 school year in five categories.
The recipients were Alec Weber for STEM, Luke Anderson for attendance, Jeanie Ellenberger for academic improvement, Chandley Stuchell for community service, Anthony Grazioli for STEM, Joshua Evans for attendance, Emily Wolfe for academic excellence, Blaine Wilson for community service, Rebecca Brown for academic improvement and Joshua Frederick for academic excellence.
Quality Life Services Chicora and Quality Life Services Sugar Creek sponsored the awards and were the business partners for the school in 2016-17. They also will be the 2017-2018 sponsors.

JACKSON TWP — Twenty-six Seneca Valley High School students will participate in the Westminster Honor Choir and give a concert at 2 p.m. Oct. 28 at Westminster College.
The 96 singers of the choir are from Butler, Beaver, Lawrence and Mercer counties. Students from 45 schools are eligible to audition.
The choir members from Seneca Valley are:

Bobi-Jean Alexander is the Seneca Valley Intermediate High School music teacher, and Aaron Magill is the senior high school choral director.

MARS — The Mars Elementary Parent Teacher Organization collected more that 74,509 box tops as part of its 2017 Box Tops for Education Contest, held Sept. 18 through Oct. 13 at Mars Primary Center, Mars Elementary School and Mars Centennial School.
Students contributed box top coupons from General Mills products. Box Tops for Education will make a contribution to the schools based on the number of box tops collected.
The classrooms in each grade level with the most box tops collected were Kim Schuelke’s PM kindergarten class, 815; Cami Shuck’s first-grade class, 4,475; Angela Wagner’s second-grade class, 4,614; Cetta Richard’s third-grade class, 1,591; Marilyn Lapiska’s fourth-grade class, 2,068; Karen Banze’s fifth-grade class, 1,895; and Megan Balawejder’s sixth-grade class, 1,633.
Students in the winning classrooms received gift certificates for the PTO’s upcoming Holiday Store or for the PTO’s Scholastic Book Fair.

BUTLER TWP — Students representing Butler County Community College clubs donated $3,600 to the American Red Cross to help victims of recent hurricanes.
The nursing and physical therapy assistant clubs donated money collected from fundraisers held throughout the year.
Representatives of BC3’s Student Life and others had a donation canopy on the college’s main campus and received contributions from faculty, staff and students.
