Dr. Cecil D. Furer
Dr. Cecil D. Furer, 63, of Buffalo Township went home to be with the Lord at 6:22 p.m. Thursday while in the company of family members at Good Samaritan Hospice Unit at Concordia in Cabot.
Cecil was born in Natrona Heights on Nov. 18, 1948, the son of Mable I. (Stivenson) Furer of Buffalo Township, who survives him, and the late Cecil C. Furer.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Janet T. (Tolan) Furer; three sons, Jason (Gayle) Furer of Freeport, Michael (January) Furer of Freeport and Gregory Furer of Buffalo Township; his daughter, Katie (Shawn) Kostelansky, of Lower Burrell; six grandchildren, Cole, Dean, Drew, Ruby and Roselyn Furer, and Luke Kostelansky; three sisters, Darlene (John) Porter of Buffalo Township, Donna (Gerry) Essary of St. Louis, Mo., and Diane (James) Lee of Buffalo Township.
Cecil graduated from Freeport High School in 1966. He went to Edinboro (Pa.) University and graduated in 1970. He received his doctorate from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in 1974 where he also served as class president.
He owned and operated the Eye Care Center in Freeport for 34 years. He also owned and operated locations in Kiski, Kittanning and New Kensington. Cecil was a mentor to numerous optometrists over his career and served as president of the Pennsylvania Optometric Association. Cecil completed multiple missionary trips to Haiti, Mexico and Guatemala providing eye care to those in need.
Cecil was a member of the Trinity United Christian Church in Lower Burrell, where he served as an elder and was the chairman on the church’s building committee. He was active in the Three Rivers Walk to Emmaus for a number of years, helping others deepen and grow their faith with the Lord.
Cecil was active in a number a community organizations. He served as the president of many organizations including the Freeport Kiwanis, the Freeport Jaycees, the Freeport Area Youth Football Organization and Freeport Boys Basketball Boosters. He also coached basketball and baseball and was a basketball referee for many years.
Cecil was a Buffalo Township supervisor from 1980 until 1998 where he was instrumental in developing the Butler-Freeport Rails to Trails.
Cecil and Janet loved to travel, seeing more than 40 countries. Cecil loved sports, especially Pitt basketball, and enjoyed exercising. Undoubtedly, his greatest love was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
