Materials for Butler Township field to arrive in six to eight weeks
BUTLER TWP — Plans for a recreational complex at Pullman Center Business Park are advancing, after the Butler Township commissioners approved the installation of artificial turf, lighting and a camera system at the site at a meeting Monday.
Butler Township manager Tom Knights said the company FieldTurf will get the materials to the township in six to eight weeks. The items approved by the commissioners Monday cost a total of about $1.5 million.
The township has been planning a recreation complex at the site for some time, which will include a field with soccer, lacrosse and football markings. The first phase of construction will begin once the township receives the materials, according to Knights.
There also will be a parking lot with 68 spaces, which Knights said is slated to contain four chargers for electric vehicles. Township officials will have further decisions to make regarding construction of fencing, seating and a concession stand at future meetings.
“We’re expecting drawings to be done in time to get authorization to bid next month,” Knights said. “We hope to be playing on the field in October.”
Knights said that although the field is several months away from being ready, local organizations already are asking to make arrangements to use it.
“Commissioners are pretty committed there is open time as well,” Knights said about community use of the field. “Anyone who is contracting it out, their own volunteers will be staffing the concession stand — and it is a rudimentary concession stand.”
The commissioners also approved the purchase of a UTV — utility task vehicle — from M&R Power Equipment for use at the township parks and for first responder purposes. The Preston Park Foundation is donating $5,000 toward the purchase of this vehicle, bringing the cost the township is paying from about $16,400 to about $11,400.
“This gives us the ability to transport someone better than literally by arm,” Knights said.
Knights said it will take about three months for the UTV to arrive to the township.
