A Butler man was sentenced to 6 to 23 months in prison for assaulting troopers who intervened in a domestic dispute in January.

Steven T. Guthrie, 41, was sentenced to serve 6 to 23 months in the Butler County Prison followed by 12 months of probation. Butler County Common Pleas Court Judge Timothy McCune imposed the sentence Thursday, June 15.

Guthrie pleaded guilty May 31 to a felony charge of assault of a law enforcement officer filed by Kittanning state police following a Jan. 6 incident in Summit Township.

Police filed numerous charges against Guthrie following a domestic dispute in which Guthrie was involved, police said.

Guthrie became aggressive with officers while being questioned, poked a trooper in the chest, ignored instructions and aggressively tried to move troopers, police said.

Police said they tackled Guthrie, but he continued resisting arrest. He then spit on one trooper, and began kicking another in the leg. Guthrie also threatened to kill all five troopers responding on scene during the incident, police said.

Guthrie was sentenced to concurrently serve 12 months of probation after pleading guilty to an unrelated charge of accidents involving damage to a vehicle or property. Those charges were filed by Butler City police following an incident that also took place Jan. 6.
