Man accused of threatening mass shooting, bombing

MIDDLESEX TWP — A Butler man is accused of threatening a mass shooting and bombing Thursday at a packed food bank in the township.

A short time later, authorities said, the suspect crashed his car into a tree after police tried to stop his vehicle.

Police arrested Joshua D. Norris, 29, of Butler on criminal and traffic charges. He is being held in the Butler County Prison on $10,000 bail.

Norris’ girlfriend shortly before 4 p.m. called 911 to notify authorities that the defendant had just texted a message threatening to kill everyone inside the Lighthouse Food Bank on East Cruikshank Road, Middlesex Township police said.

The text said, “I will shoot you all and I’ll run you all over,” according to court documents.

Norris also left his girlfriend a telephone voice message, saying, “I’ll blow up the whole building,” documents said.

Police noted there were about 100 people at the food bank at the time.

While headed to the facility, police from Middlesex and Penn townships spotted the defendant’s car headed north on Route 8. When they tried to stop Norris, his car veered off the road and went up a hillside.

The vehicle struck a small tree and ended in a culvert.

District Judge Sue Haggerty later arraigned Norris on three counts each of terroristic threats and reckless endangerment and charges of driving with a suspend license and careless driving.
