Butler track athletes setting records
Six more Butler varsity indoor track and field records were either tied or beaten over the weekend as the Golden Tornado competed at Edinboro University Saturday and at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio, on Sunday.
Guinness Brown tied the team's 60-meter record with a 7.14-second run Saturday. He shares that mark with Doug Moran, who set it in 2007.
Brown ran the 200 meters in 22.65 seconds, breaking the record of 22.82 set by Josh Dumbaugh in 1999.
On the girls side, Anna Baxter broke the school mark in the 60 hurdles with a time of 9.22 seconds. Lexi Frost set the previous record of 9.51 in 2012.
Butler's boys 4x200 meter relay team posted a record time of 1 minute, 31.44 seconds. That unit consisted of Brown, Byron Manchester, Braydon Young and Isaiah Seybert. The previous mark of 1:37.67 was set in 2007 by Doug Moran, current sprint coach Fred Pinto, Casey Piper and Mason McLaughlin.
The Tornado's 4x400 relay team of Brown, Alex Karenbauer, Seybert and Manchester ran a school-record 3:28.44, shattering the previous mark of 3:31.82, set in 2018. That foursome — Cade Gratzmiller (Slippery Rock), Ryan Marcella (Duquesne), Jacob Wolfrum (Duquesne) and Noah Beveridge (Syracuse) is competing in college now.
C.J. Singleton ran the 3,200 meters in 9:35.88, breaking the school record of 9:42 set by teammate Tim Patterson only two weeks ago.
Other top times turned in by Butler athletes over the weekend included Skyler Vavro's 4:27.15 in the 1,600, Ryder Kriley's 2:00.47 in the 800, Manchester's 8.70 in the 60 hurdles.
The Tornado's 4x200 girls relay of Alli Morrow, Taylor Timmons, Gabby Boden and Baxter ran a season-best 1:47.77 to qualify for the state meet. The 4x400 relay of Boden, Timmons, Chelsey Kabel and Emma Lehman also ran a season-best time of 4:05.87 to qualify for states.

Slippery Rock's Gianna Bedel took first in the high jump at the SRU all-comers meet, breaking the Rockets' indoor record. Her jump was 5 feet, 2 inches.
Seaton Wozniak took second place in the boys shot put with a throw of 39 feet, 9.5 inches.
Boys Basketball
James Sitter scored 29 points and Matt Franos tallied 23 points, eight assists and seven rebounds Saturday as Fairview (18-2) defeated Knoch, 73-50, at North Allegheny.
Jared Schrecengost paced the Knights (18-3) with 16 points. Ryan Lang added 11 points and Brady McKee 10.
Blackhawk 66, Seneca Valley 61 — The Raiders fell to 3-17 overall with this loss. Seneca Valley ends its season Monday at Norwin.
Girls Basketball
Kait Constantino scored 30 points while Jordan Best tallied 13 points and eight rebounds for Clarion in a 63-28 win over Karns City.
Brooke Manuel had 12 points and 12 rebounds, Emma Johns 11 points for the Gremlins (7-14).
Wrestling
Seneca Valley got knocked out of the PIAA Class AAAA Team Championships in the consolation semifinals, losing a 33-31 decision to Bethlehem Catholic.
Chanz Shearer won by pinfall at 138 pounds for the Raiders while Davin Beahm won by injury default at heavyweight. Bethlehem Catholic went on to place third in the 16-team tournament.
Nazareth, which defeated SV 50-10 earlier in the tourney, won the PIAA team title with a 38-21 victory over previously unbeaten Waynesburg in the championship match.
Also Saturday, Seneca Valley defeated Central Dauphin 37-28. Dylan Chappell at 120 pounds, Antonio Amelio at 145 and Liam Volk-Klos at 170 had pins for the Raiders.
