99 charges dropped in police chase, drug case

SLIPPERY ROCK — A typographical error was corrected and a preliminary hearing was waived Wednesday, resulting in 99 counts of drug sales dropped in the case against a Pittsburgh man.

The 100 counts of felony drug sales was amended to one count in the case against Delvante D. Thompson, 35, who state police accused of leading a chase along Interstate 79, while possessing 100 glassine bags of suspected heroin.

On April 16, Thompson fled state police on Interstate 79 starting in Cranberry Township and was apprehended in Muddy Creek Township, according to the report.

Along the way, he allegedly disposed of a backpack containing suspected heroin by throwing it from the window of his vehicle, police said.

Thompson was additionally charged with a felony of fleeing police, two counts of misdemeanor use and possession of drug paraphernalia, as well as several traffic citations for the incident.

Thompson waived his preliminary hearing before District Judge Joseph Nash, and charges were amended.

David Beichner, assistant district attorney, asked Nash that the 100 counts of drug sales be reduced to one count, saying the other 99 charges were filed due to a “typographical error.”

A count of misdemeanor possession of marijuana was added to the case as well.

Owen M. Seman, defense attorney, asked Nash if Thompson’s bail could be reduced from $150,000.

Beichner argued that the appeal should be denied, due to the danger Thompson posed to the public.

“This was a high-speed chase on the interstate, putting countless people in danger,” he said. “He put the officers at risk and the citizens of Butler County at risk.”

Nash denied the request for a bail reduction.

Thompson is being held in Butler County Prison under an additional $10,000 bail for a separate police chase incident in Jackson Township.
