The Regatta at Lake Arthur has been renamed the Moraine State Park Regatta for its 14th year Aug. 3 and 4.

Regatta where art thou? The answer is in the new name.

The Regatta at Lake Arthur has officially been renamed the Moraine State Park Regatta for its 14th year, according to Mike Hall, president of the regatta's leadership board.

“More people associate with Moraine State Park than they do with Lake Arthur,” Hall said. “With the 50th anniversary of Moraine next year we thought it would be a good time to make a change to the regatta, so it would be ready for the big thing.”

Hall said the regatta, set to run Aug. 3 and 4 this year, will also have a new coordinator. He said the former organizers stepped down after five years in that role.

“(East Wing) have done a phenomenal job with the regatta for the past five years,” he said.

Hall said he was familiar with Amanda Becker, owner of Appleseed Events, before she was hired as the coordinator for this year's regatta.

“I felt like she was someone who could step right in and handle the job,” Hall said. “I have the utmost confidence in her to bring this to another level.”

Becker said the previous coordinator shared its knowledge and notes for the event, which drew 19,000 people last year.

“One of the things we've been thinking a lot about is the mission of the event,” Becker said. “We were trying to come up with some additional ideas of how to highlight the park, not just in the water, but in other areas of the park as well.”

Becker said most of the changes for this year will be subtle and involve trying to move people throughout the park with a few fresh activities, which could include bringing back some events of the past such as geocaches, an activity in which participants use a Global Positioning System receiver or mobile device to hide and seek containers, called “geocaches” at specific locations.

“We're planning to really blow it out of the water next year, so I don't see any huge changes happening this year in light of that,” she said.

Hall said this year's regatta is more about preparing Becker for a highly anticipated 50th anniversary of Moraine State Park in 2020.

“This year is more of an initial year to get her feet wet,” Hall said. “We're just hoping to step it up.”

Hall said he wants to draw more attention to the park, especially from those in Pittsburgh or Cranberry Township, who don't realize they have a nice park within a 30-minute drive.

“Moraine State Park is still unfortunately one of the best kept secrets of the area,” Hall said.
