SHENANGO TWP, Mercer County — Two Harrisville motorcyclists were badly hurt in a five-vehicle weekend crash in southwestern Mercer County, authorities said, and the initiating driver fled the scene.

Two other cyclists, also from Harrisville, suffered less severe injuries in the same wreck on Interstate 80 westbound, just east of the Ohio state line.

Jordan L. Foster, 24, and Rebecca L. Harris, 23, were taken to St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital in Youngstown with serious injuries.

Milton C. Harris, 55, and Lisa L. Harris, 50, were taken to the same hospital with minor injuries.

The conditions of the injured were not known this morning.

State police said the crash happened just before 6 p.m. Friday when the driver of an unidentified vehicle traveling in the right lane abruptly applied the brakes and turned into the left lane to use the median crossover.

The vehicle crossed into the path of a car driven by Damon S. McDaniel, 54, of Chesapeake, Ohio, which was in the left lane. McDaniel slammed on his brakes to avoid a collision.

In turn, Milton Harris, who was driving a 2016 Harley-Davidson Ultra behind the car, swerved and applied his brakes, police said. Harris moments later laid down the bike.

He was not wearing a helmet. His passenger, Lisa L. Harris, had a helmet on.

Foster, who was driving a 2013 Harley-Davidson Softail behind the other cycle, was unable to stop in time and hit the back of McDaniel’s car, police said.

The collision sent Foster and his passenger, Rebecca Harris, onto the pavement. Neither was wearing a helmet.

A pair of other motorcyclists also headed west behind the other vehicles were able to stop in time and provided investigators with eyewitness accounts.

Police said the driver of the vehicle that caused the wreck stopped momentarily in the median crossover but then fled the scene, traveling east on I-80.
