Presenting the 2011-12 Scoops awards

With the high school basketball season winding to a close, this seems like a good time to take stock in the season that was (and for a precious few teams, still is).

In another case of perfect timing, Academy Awards were handed out Sunday.

And who doesn’t like an awards show?

So, without further ado (and without Billy Crystal), here are my Butler County High School Basketball Awards.

You can call them the Scoops:

•

Outstanding Coaching, Boys. And the nominees are: Karen Davis, Union, Matt Clement, Butler; Rob Carmody, Mars; Don Fee, Grove City.Fine nominees, all.Coaches are like the directors, in charge of so many moving parts. They must get the best performances out of their actors. And the winner is ... Karen Davis.Like the Oscars, the Scoops are suckers for rewarding people for a lifetime of work, especially when they are leaving the stage.Davis guided the Golden Knights to a 20-4 record this season, her last on the bench.•

Outstanding Coaching, Girls. And the nominees are: Rob Lombardo, Seneca Valley; Dave Sherman, A-C Valley; Tony Howard, Mars; Mark Yeager, Moniteau. And the winner is ... Tony Howard. Not much was expected out of the Planets this season, particularly a section title. But that’s exactly what Howard and Mars accomplished.•

Best Player, Boy.And the nominees are: Kyle Armagost, Moniteau; Ryan Bartley, A-C Valley; Brody Pollock, Union; Nate Snodgrass, Butler. And the winner is ... Nate Snodgrass. This is the slam-dunk category of the Scoops.•

Best Player, Girl. And the nominees are: Morgan Siebka, Slippery Rock; Alex Karika, Seneca Valley; Sierra Smith, Union; Mackenzie O’Donnell, Butler. And the winner is ... Alex Karika.Another virtual slam-dunk. Karika dominated so many games this season for the resurgent Raiders.•

Best individual game performance, non-Snodgrass Division.Lately, pretty much every night has been a spectacular night for Butler’s point guard. So, let’s give someone else a chance. This is sort of like George C. Scott turning down his Oscar nomination for “Patton.” Snodgrass clearly had some of the best performances of the season. So, the winner is ... Ryan Bartley, A-C Valley.Bartley had one of the most amazing stat lines this year in a game when the Falcons played Moniteau — he had 28 points and 23 rebounds — including 14 offensive boards.Honorable mention included some of the many double-doubles by Kyle Armagost, the eight 3-pointers in a WPIAL playoff game by Butler’s Cody West and Karika’s 35 points against New Castle.Mike Kilroy is a staff writer for the Butler Eagle.
