High school roundup: Freeport knocked out of playoffs

Freeport saw an unceremonious end to its run in the WPIAL Class 4A playoffs Monday night at Laurel Highlands. The No. 15 seed ‘Jackets were bounced 69-45 by the second-seeded Mustangs.

Gain Croney led Freeport with 11 points. West Virginia recruit Rodney Gallagher scored 26 points for Laurel Highlands. The ‘Jackets finished the season 13-11.

Track and Field

Butler’s boys placed third and the Golden Tornado girls sixth during the Western Pa. TSTCA Indoor Track and Field Championships, held Saturday at Edinboro University.

There were 70 schools participating.

Megan Baggetta won the triple jump for Butler’s girls with a leap of 36 feet, 11.5 inches. Ava Brewster set a school record in the 3,000 meters at 10 minutes, 46.23 seconds. The previous mark was 10:57.68, set by Jen Cichra in 2020.

Grace Nichols and Baggetta will be competing at Sunday’s Indoor State Championships at Penn State University.

On the boys side, Butler’s Drew Griffith won the mile run in 4:22.34 and Landon Lacey took the 400 meters in 50.20 seconds. The Tornado’s distance medley relay quartet of Owen Dressler, Drew Knight, Zachary Slear and Griffith won with a time of 10:27.12. That is the fastest time in the state entering the state championships.

Griffith, Lacey, Butler’s DMR, 4x200, 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams will all be competing at the state meet.

North Allegheny won the Western Pa. boys and girls team titles.

4x400: 4-Aaron Stebick, Griffin Bauer, Drew Knight, Drew Griffith 3:38.76

Wrestling

Seneca Valley sophomore Maddee Fischer and freshman Hannah Hornick placed second and fourth, respectively, at Sunday’s Western Pa. Girls Championship, held at North Allegheny High School.

Boys — A number of wrestlers advanced from the Class 2A Eastern Sectional, held at Greensburg Salem High School. They include North Catholic’s Angelo Amelio (4th at 121 pounds), Matthew Denninger (6th at 127), Scott Huffmyer (6th at 133) and Knoch’s Owen Layhew (5th at 152).

The top six in each weight class move on to the WPIAL championships, scheduled Friday and Saturday at Chartiers Valley High School.
