Fitting finale for NFL
Super Bowl LVII is intriguing in a lot of ways.
It’s the AFC’s No. 12 seed vs. the NFC’s No. 1 seed.
It’s a battle of quarterbacks — Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts — who were legitimate candidates for the NFL MVP award for 2022.
It’s the first time two brothers — Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce and Philadelphia center Jason Kelce — have opposed each other in a Super Bowl.
The game also features two former Steelers having solid seasons for their respective teams. Eagles defensive lineman Javon Hargrove had 11 quarterback sacks this season while Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster had 78 catches for 933 yards and three touchdowns.
This contest is filled with intriguing story-lines.
The game may not be too bad, either.
Both of these teams are 16-3. Both have mobile quarterbacks who can create plays. Both have their share of playmakers offensively.
Many analysts are viewing this match-up as Mahomes Magic vs. one of the best defenses in the NFL. That should be a big part of this game. The feeling here is that it will play to the Eagles’ favor.
Philadelphia can get to the quarterback — big time. The Eagles led the NFL with 70 sacks this season. Four members of that defense had at least 11 sacks: Hargrave, Haason Reddick with 16, Brandon Graham and Josh Sweat with 11 each.
Mahomes is playing with a high ankle sprain. Yes, he’s had two weeks to rest it, but high ankle sprains do not heal quickly. Mahomes has been receiving treatments on it all week and said he’ll receive one right before game-time.
Obviously, the guy’s gonna play and he’ll be a little more agile than he was in the AFC title game. But Mahomes won’t be as mobile as he usually is and that could be bad news against an Eagles defense that’s adept at attacking the line of scrimmage.
Tampa Bay gave Mahomes fits in the Super Bowl two years ago. He was seemingly running for his life on every pass play. This game probably won’t be quite like that one, but the Eagle defenders will have their moments.
My pick is the Eagles to win Super Bowl LVII, partly because of their pass rush, partly because of their running game. While quarterbacks are typically the MVP of this game, my take is Philadelphia running back Miles Sanders will have a big game as the Eagles attempt to control the football.
Sanders rushed for 1,269 yards and 11 touchdowns during the regular season. I can see him going for more than 100 in this game, scoring two touchdowns and grabbing the Super Bowl MVP award.
Mahomes has quite an outlet in tight end Kelce, but the Eagles know that. He’ll get his share of catches, but I don’t think he’ll have an MVP-caliber game.
The choice here is Philadelphia, 28-17.
