High school roundup

Melaina DeZort totaled 29 points and Morgan Croney chipped in with another 10 as Freeport’s girls basketball team hosted and defeated Valley, 53-37, Thursday.

The Yellowjackets led by 10 after the initial frame and 17 at the midway point.

Knoch 63, Deer Lakes 18 — The Knights (9-5, 4-2) limited the Lancers to three points in the final 16 minutes, adding to a solid showing on the other end of the floor.

Hattie McGraw led Knoch with 17 points — including four treys — and Nina Shaw (15 points) and Naturelle Ewing (13) helped out. The Knights will visit Pine-Richland Friday night.

North Catholic 49, Highlands 35 — Alayna Rocco poured in 18 points and Ava Walker 12 more in this win.

Boys Basketball

Micah Rupp had a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double as Karns City (11-2) went on the road and beat Union, 59-28. Taite Beighley and Jacob Callihan both added another 14 points and the Gremlins held a 20-point edge at halftime.

Summit Academy 75, Apollo-Ridge 23 — Against an injury-hampered opponent, the Knights’ Elijah Adams bucketed 24 points and Tayvone Bibbs 18. Allen Grimes helped out with another 10 as his side led by 44 at the halftime break.

Swimming

Season Grant (200-yard freestyle), Mollie Massella (200 IM, 500 freestyle), Gracie Olshanski (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle), Tessa Szymanski (100 butterfly), and Ann-Katherine Burns (100 breaststroke) all won individual events as Slippery Rock’s girls swim team improved to 5-0 with a victory over Oil City.

The Rockets’ boys bowed to the Oilers, but Cody Hartle (200 IM), Connor Wallace (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle), Kevin Bowser (100 butterfly, 100 backstroke) notched solo wins.

Wrestling

Knoch’s lone senior, Matt Frank, scored a pin at 172 pounds on Senior Night as the Knights defeated Ellwood City, 42-36, on Wednesday.

Also picking up wins for the Knights — all by pinfall — were Cam Elliott, Derek Glover, Owen Layhew, Brady Pflugh and Wyatt Foster. Miranda Lajevic won by forfeit. Knoch travels to Mercer for a tournament this weekend, then rounds out section competition next Wednesday at Summit Academy.
