Russell E. Layton Sr., 71, of Butler, formerly of Belmont, N.Y., died peacefully at his daughter's home Monday.

Born Nov. 3, 1936, in Saxonburg, he was the son of Shirl E. Sr. and Betty Ann Brown Layton.

He was an avid hunter, fisherman and NASCAR fan, and he was a member of the Moose Lodge in New York.

Mr. Layton retired in 2003 from Baker's Excavating Co. of Jericho Hill, in Alfred, N.Y.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. William (Mary) Wiley of Chewton, Mary Alice Layton of New Castle and Darlene Layton and her husband, Richard Plaisted, of Butler; two sons, Russell E. Layton and his fiancée, Dawna Cress, of Butler and Randy Layton of Belmont; a stepson, Charles Bowser of Wellsville, N.Y.; three grandchildren; a great-grandchild; two brothers, Shirl E. "Tony" Layton Jr. of Lenoir, N.C., and Dennis P. Layton of Gibsonia; two sisters, Edwina Williams of Augusta, Ga., and Donna Sholes of Butler.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Ann Hill Layton, who died Aug. 21, 2003; an infant daughter; a sister; a nephew, and a niece.

<B>LAYTON</B> — Private services and burial for Russell E. Layton Sr., who died Monday, Feb. 11, 2008, were private.Arrangements were handled by the <B>Young Funeral Home</B>, and information also is available at www.youngfuneralhomes.com.
