Care For Antique Ornaments
To care for antique ornaments, gather the following supplies:
• Acid-free paper
• Perhaps bubble wrap or bubble bags
Some collectors dislike the bulkiness of the wrap and say it can lead to breakage, while others swear by it for ornaments with odd appendages.
• Desiccant pads to ward off moisture
• Sturdy ornament boxes and storage tubs
• A soft makeup brush
When ready to store the ornaments, brush them gently with the makeup brush to remove dust.Carefully remove any wire hangers that could scratch the surface.Wrap the ornaments in the acid-free tissue and place them in compartmentalized boxes or, if they are large or oddly shaped, in strong plastic storage boxes.Don't store them in cardboard boxes, which are acidic and could damage the ornaments. Some collectors place delicate ornaments, wrapped in acid-free tissue, in bubble wrap pouches or Ziploc-type bags, but don't seal them tightly; air circulation is important.Place a few pouches of desiccant in each container before storing them in a dry place with steady temperature.
