Butler wrestlers shine at Southmoreland tourney
Behind first-place efforts from five Butler wrestlers, the Golden Tornado came out on top of the 33-team Southmoreland Holiday Classic, held Tuesday and Wednesday.
Freshman Santino Slaboda, who’s ranked second in the state in 3A, went 4-0 at the event and took first in the 107-pound weight class. At 133 pounds, Gavin Rush also proved to be the standard, while Levi Donnell (160 lbs.) went 5-0 with a pin in the finals. Mickey Kreinbucher (189 lbs.) had four wins to score back-to-back titles, while Landon Christy (215 lbs.) had three falls.
Kelley Schaukowitsch went 5-2 in the 121-pound weight class, finishing fifth. Kase Chopp (139 lbs.) and Ethan Babay (205 lbs.) also took fifth, while Matt Zinkhann (172 lbs.) placed fourth.
Butler will be back in action Wednesday at North Hills before returning home on Jan. 11 to face off with North Allegheny.
Moniteau stymied Sharon’s offense while the Warriors received 13 points from Catherine Kelly and 11 courtesy of Allie Pry in a 37-24 defeat of the Tigers at the Mercer Holiday Tournament on Thursday.
Kendall Sankey tallied six points and seven rebounds for the Warriors (6-2).

Knoch 63, Ellis School 4 — Nina Shaw (13 points), Hattie McGraw (12), and Adah Fuller (11) all scored in double figures as Knoch raced out to a 24-0 first-quarter lead and smothered Ellis School at the Shady Side Academy Tournament.
McGraw sank four treys for the Knights (3-4), who finished with 11 makes from behind the arc in the romp. Knoch will play Seneca Valley in the same event on Friday.
Boys Basketball
Dean Furer and Brady Sullivan both scored 10 points to help Freeport defeat Obama Academy 50-43 at the Freeport Tournament.
The Yellowjackets (7-2), who won their sixth straight game, held the Eagles to just 15 points in the second half.
Obama’s Torrien Perkins led all scorers with 23 points.
