Sister Marjorie Flanagan S.C.
Sister Marjorie Flanagan S.C., formerly Sister M. Placide, 90, died Tuesday at Caritas Christi, the motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill, Greensburg.
Born Aug. 16, 1916, she was the daughter of John J. and Stella C. Stein Flanagan.
She entered the congregation of the Sisters of Charity on March 25, 1935, from St. Patrick Parish, Bradys Bend.
Sister Flanagan earned a bachelor's degree in history and psychology from Duquesne University and taught elementary grade students in schools of the dioceses of Greensburg, Phoenix and Pittsburgh.
An avid reader and a "no nonsense" teacher, she motivated students to read, to explore and to foster a desire for learning.
Sister Marjorie organized and supervised one of the first diocesan elementary school Learning Centers, "a new trend in teaching in the 1970s" at St. James School in Wilkinsburg.
Afflicted with failing health for a number of years, she believed, as did Elizabeth Ann Seton, "The affliction of this life is but a moment, while the glory in the life to come will be eternal."
Surviving are a brother, John F. (Arleen) Flanagan; a sister, Stella Flanagan; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Stephen C., Vincent A., Thomas B., and James Leo Flanagan; and three sisters, Eileen Flanagan, Mrs. Rose Marie (Jack) Cooney and Mrs. Kathleen (Thomas) Rice.
