WINFIELD TWP — A 12-stall garage on Winfield Road went up in flames just before dawn this morning. No one was injured but the fire caused tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage.

Among the destroyed contents were at least four vehicles, a tractor and a fiberglass fishing boat, authorities said.

Flames had already leveled the large pole-style building before crews got there but firefighters from several departments were able to save a barn close by, authorities said.

The state police fire marshal’s office has been called to investigate what started the blaze at 682 Winfield Road in Winfield Township about 5:30 a.m.

Ronald M. Jancosko owns the home, garage and barn on the 20-plus acres of property, according to the Butler County Assessment Office. Jancosko has an unlisted telephone number and could not be reached for comment.

A passing motorist apparently was the first to notify 911 of the fire.

But by the time the homeowner spotted the fire, authorities said, flames had taken over 90 percent of the structure.

“It was already on the ground when we got there,” said a firefighter who did not want his name used. “All that was still standing were the poles and beams.”

Authorities described the estimated 40-foot-by-60-foot building as being ”three stalls wide and four stalls deep.” The building, which was constructed of a wood frame with steel siding, had electrical service connected to it at the time of the fire.

Fire crews from Winfield, Buffalo, Saxonburg and Herman hit the burning remains of the garage with water but also used secondary lines to douse the barn just 20 feet away.

“We were able to save the barn,” the firefighter said.

Winfield firefighters remained on the scene until about 7:15 a.m.
