Balog named Distinguished Graduate
Douglas Balog was named the recipient of the 37th annual Butler Senior High School Distinguished Graduate Award at the high school’s graduation ceremony Tuesday night.
A 1979 graduate of Butler High School, Balog attended elementary school at Butler Catholic School. He graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a bachelor of science degree in computer science in 1983.
He immediately joined IBM in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., working on the architectural validation of IBM’s next-generation of mainframe computers.
Balog spent 18 years in New York in a variety of development, brand and corporate roles until 2001 when he moved to San Francisco to help one of IBM’s largest clients deploy and operate one of the largest mainframe and UNIX server frames for Web trading.
A member of IBM for more than 30 years, Balog is currently general manager of Power Systems and is responsible for IBM’s worldwide Power server business and the IBM Power System franchise.
He is a member of IBM’s performance team and strategy team, which focuses respectively on tactical execution and strategic directions.
Balog has been involved across IBM’s System z, System x, BladeCenter System Storage and now Power Systems. Most recently he had been general manager for System z where he led the successful launch of the zEnterprise and delivered the largest mainframe MIPs in the history of the company.
Additionally Balog led the repositioning of System z for Operational Analytics, Cloud technology and Ultimate Security.
He lives in Chapel Hill, N.C., with his wife and two children.
