Outage leads to false alarms

BUTLER TWP — A power outage Thursday night led to several fire calls that were not fires.

West Penn Power spokesman Todd Meyers said 532 customers in the township lost power late Thursday evening when a tree toppled a power line near the intersection of Whitestown Road and Villa Drive.

Power was restored as of this morning, he said.

Chief Toby Wehr of Butler Township Fire District 3 said the department responded to two automatic fire alarms and six possible structure fire calls.

In each case, no fire was found. Wehr said the calls were caused by a power surge from the outage.

“There was just the smell of something burning or sparks that came out of the outlets,” Wehr said.

The automatic alarms went off at Anytime Fitness and Rite Aid in Point Plaza. The fire calls all were at houses, including on Evans City Road, Villa Drive, Farmington Drive and Havenhill Drive. In some cases, the surge tripped residents’ breakers.

Although there only were six calls, Wehr said firefighters ended up checking out about 14 houses because neighbors requested it.
