Woman charged in food stamp case
A Butler County woman already facing trial for welfare fraud is again charged with swindling the federal food stamp program.
The suspect, 38-year-old Diana McCallister of East Butler, in the latest case is accused of illegally getting nearly $4,000 in food stamp benefits between 2014 and 2015.
McCallister is charged with a felony count of welfare fraud and faces a hearing in the case next month.
The Pennsylvania Inspector General’s office, which is responsible for investigating welfare fraud and programs administered through the Department of Public Welfare, filed the case Monday.
Investigators said McCallister failed to report that her live-in boyfriend was employed and earning wages at a Karns City area construction company between Sept. 1, 2014, and June 30, 2015, when she collected $3,923 in benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
The violation of the Public Welfare Code statute is a third-degree felony and carries a maximum penalty of 7 years imprisonment and a $15,000 fine.
A preliminary hearing for McCallister is April 4 at the office of District Judge William Fullerton in Butler.
Online court records don’t list an attorney for McCallister.
Court records did show that she is awaiting trial on a misdemeanor count of welfare fraud.
Authorities in that case allege McCallister between Feb. 1 and April 30, 2014, obtained $1,984 in SNAP benefits for which she was not entitled.
