Consolidation timeline listed

Board vote likely slated in January

BUTLER TWP — Butler School District Superintendent Dale Lumley announced Monday a general timeline for possible school consolidation, which could lead to the closing of several elementary schools.

Lumley said the board likely will vote to consider consolidation in January. Then, it would hold a public hearing in February to take comments about the project.

Following the hearing, Lumley said, the board would have to wait 90 days before taking a final vote. He said that vote likely would have to take place in May if the plan were to go into effect in the 2015-16 school year.

The board will see a master plan presentation of two or three of the plans at 7 p.m. Monday at the Butler Intermediate High School auditorium. Lumley said the Pittsburgh firm Thomas and Williamson Program Management will select which plans it will present for consideration. The board will not make any decision at the meeting.

In October, Thomas and Williamson presented about a dozen plans to the board and the public and recommended three, which would close some elementary schools and reconfigure the grades. More than 600 people attended the meeting.

The plans included closing six or seven of the 11 elementary schools and reconfiguring grades into a model of K through 3 or 4, 4 to 5 through 6, 7 through 9 and 10 through 12. The district currently has 11 elementary schools.

The plans could save the district between $4.7 million and $5.7 million per year.

In November, a group called Butler Residents for Quality Schools proposed a plan closing three elementary schools and the junior high, and maintaining the district’s current K through 6 model at the elementary schools. Later in the month, the district posted an online survey about the plans for public input.
