Cranberry takes zoning action

Ordinance deals with dogs, drugs

CRANBERRY TWP — The township supervisors have redefined the definitions for both dog kennels and methadone facilities.

They approved the technical zoning amendment Thursday night.

The ordinance limits the number of dogs a person can have to seven if his property is less than 20 acres and 10 dogs for properties of more than 20 acres.

Residential property owners who currently exceed the dog limit and do not keep the animals for compensation may register for a nonconforming use permit within six months of the amendment being passed without being in violation.

The ordinance also eliminates the definition of a methadone facility and creates the definition of a controlled substance dispensation facility. This amendment allows the township to regulate any facilities where controlled substances are dispensed.

The ordinance encompasses a wide array of products for substance abuse. It clarifies and differentiates between places that offer counseling for substance abuse as being allowed anywhere a professional office is versus the dispensation of the controlled substance that is only allowed in specific districts.
