Rock rips through Eagles

SLIPPERY ROCK— Records are made to be tied?

Slippery Rock University's basketball programs tied three school marks Wednesday night during their doubleheader sweep of Lock Haven at Morrow Field House.

SRU's men (17-7, 8-3) won their fifth straight game by posting a 102-65 triumph over the Bald Eagles. The Rock women (10-14, 5-6) scored a 101-72 victory.

The sweep is believed to be the first time in school history that both SRU teams surpassed the 100-point mark on the same night. The men scored 100 points for the sixth time this season. The women reached 100 for the second time this year and the 11th time in program history.

Coupled with a 60-58 California (Pa.) loss at Indiana (Pa.), SRU's men clinched the team's first PSAC West playoff berth since the 1999-2000 season.

As for the three tied records:

• Wednesday's win was The Rock men's 17th of the season, a 10-game improvement over last year's total. That ties coach Dave Rooney's school record for biggest turnaround from one season to the next. Rooney coached SRUto a 6-19 record in 1980-81 and a 16-10 mark in 1981-82.

• Senior point guard Kyle Camper had 11 assists in 24 minutes Wednesday, giving him 259 assists for the season and tying the program's single-season mark set by Brent Schrempf in 1993-94.

Camper needs 15 assists to break the PSACsingle-season mark.

"I never look at my statistics after a game or during a season,"Camper said. "The only number I care about is wins."

• Senior guard Amanda Nero sank nine 3-pointers in 10 attempts for the Rock women, tying the program record for most treys in a game. The mark was set by Annette Bergman in the 1992-93 campaign.

Nero scored a career-high 38 points. She is averaging 9.8 points per game with a previous season-best of 18 in a game. She scored 30 against IUPin a game last year.

Her effort came on the heels of learning that fellow guard Nikki Presto will be out for the season with a torn ACL.

"I'm not surprised at this,"SRUcoach Laurel Heilman said of Nero's performance. "That's why we brought her in here four years ago. Amanda is a pure shooter.

"If I was to make a shooting video, I'd use her. Her form and technique are perfect. And she didn't force any shots tonight."

Nero actually surprised herself by shooting at all.

"I was awful in warm-ups. I wasn't hitting anything," she said. "I figured I'd be doing a lot of passing tonight.

"Their zone left us wide open on the perimeter. The shots just kept going in."

The Rock women sank 12 of their first 15 3-point attempts and hit 14 of 21 overall. Grove City High graduate Julie Molloy drained three treys and scored 11 points.

Lock Haven's women (3-21, 0-11) dropped their 16th straight game.

SRUcontrols its own playoff destiny with three games remaining.

The Bald Eagle men (4-21, 2-10) lost for the 16th time in 17 games. The one win was a 64-62 victory at California that helped SRU'smen clinch their postseason spot.

Six Rock players reached double figures Wednesday, led by Jamar Scales with 19 off the bench. The Rock scored 57 points in the first half despite leading scorer Denell Stephens picking up two fouls in the first two minutes and sitting for the rest of the half.

"Our bench guys know to be ready,"first-year coach Kevin Reynolds said. "We had 25 assists and only six turnovers tonight. Jamar was outstanding and Erroll Robinson gave us quality minutes."
