Parents face meth charges
CHICORA — Barb Anthony had no idea the parents of her grandchildren’s playmates might be cooking methamphetamine.
So she was caught off guard when Harley D. Stone, 32, and his wife Jenna M. Stone, 31, were arrested at 5 p.m. Thursday for allegedly producing meth at their home on 211 W. Slippery Rock St.
“I’ve know them for a very long time, and it came as a big surprise to me,” Anthony said. “My grandchildren played with their children.”
The Stones’ children, ages 9, 6 and 5, were in the home when, according to police, Harley and Jenna Stone were found to be producing meth via a one-pot, “shake and bake” method in an upstairs room.
State police were notified at 4:56 p.m. Thursday by Clarion County Probation that the probation department was attempting to arrest Jenna Stone on a warrant from the Jefferson and Clarion County Probation office.
Probation officers knocked on the door of their home and got no response, so they entered.
They found the couple there. When they arrested Jenna Stone, the probation officers saw meth being cooked. According to police, Harley Stone said that he made the meth and that he and Jenna Stone smoked it.
A search warrant was issued, and Clandestine Lab team members found meth, a small amount of marijuana and the items for meth production including acetone, lye, drain cleaner, Coleman fuel, a plastic cap with tubing for acid generator, a Mason jar, a glass measuring cup with residue, and coffee filters, according to police.
The three children have been removed from the home.
The Clandestine Lab team cleaned up the lab. A warning sign on the front door of the vacated house cautions passers-by that while drug lab items have been removed, there still may be hazardous substances or waste either in the house or on the property. The sign says that people should “exercise caution while on these premises.”
Harley and Jenna Stone face multiple meth production charges, as well as charges of endangering the welfare of children.
Harley Stone is charged with depositing, storing and disposing chemical waste; liquifying ammonia gas-precursors and chemicals; knowingly possessing medicines with the intent to manufacture meth; knowingly possessing counterfeit or controlled meth and marijuana; use of drug paraphernalia; and the manufacturing of meth with someone under the age of 18 present.
Of the Stones’ arrest, Anthony said, “It was a very scary thing. I’m very put out with them doing that with their children in the house.
“It’s ridiculous. You hear about this in big cities. I never thought it would happen here in Chicora.”
Neighbor Crystal Tomsey also was surprised.
“I didn’t suspect anything,” she said. “I never thought it would have been right there.”
She also said the Stones kept to themselves.
“I know none of us associated with them at all,” she said.
Harley Stone is in Butler County Prison, unable to post bail, with a preliminary hearing at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
Jenna Stone is placed in Clarion County Corrections for probation violations in regards to the meth charges.
Harley Stone has a DUI conviction in 2002 in Armstrong County.
Jenna Stone pleaded guilty last year to a felony drug charge in Clarion County. She was sentenced to a minimum of one year in prison. She also pleaded guilty Nov. 5 in Armstrong County to a misdemeanor charge of possession of a controlled substance.
