Case continued for 2 prisoners accused of inmate assault
The case of two Butler County Prison inmates charged with beating another prisoner was continued Monday.
Keith P. Reges, 35, and Michael P. Reinhart, 44, had charges filed against them in July for felony counts of aggravated assault, assault by a prisoner and criminal conspiracy. Butler County Detectives filed the charges.
Rebecca Black, defense attorney for Reinhart, and Armand Cingolani, defense attorney for Reges, appeared before District Judge William Fullerton to request the continuance.
“We would like more time to prepare for the hearing and to get a court reporter,” Black said.
According to charging documents, the case emerged following video surveillance footage of what police alleged was an assault at around 3:30 p.m. June 25 in the jail’s multipurpose room.
The video depicts an inmate receiving a haircut with an electric razor and one person sitting at the table awaiting a haircut, detectives said. Reinhart and Reges enter the room with a third man, who was not charged. Police said he did not take part in the beating.
Detectives said the inmate performing the haircut noticed the three enter but did not engage with them.
“Reinhart then approaches the (inmate cutting hair) from behind, winds up with his right arm and strikes (him) on the right side of the head,” detectives said.
“Reges struck the victim in excess of 15 times, kicked him several times, and toward the end of the assault, (he) had the victim on the floor in a strangulation hold while Reinhart struck the victim,” detectives said.
A corrections officer discovered the assault, sprayed pepper spray into the room, then retreated for backup. Detectives said Reinhart then crossed the room, kicked the beaten inmate in the face and knocked him unconscious.
According to court documents, the beaten inmate suffered two black eyes and cuts on his face. He does not remember the incident.
Last year, Reges pleaded guilty to misdemeanor simple assault after beating his then-girlfriend. He also is awaiting trial for a case in which he’s accused of strangling his then-girlfriend’s mother.
Reinhart also is awaiting trial in two cases filed in 2021. In September, police arrested Reinhart and charged him with terroristic threats and criminal mischief. Officers said he threatened to kill multiple people, including the officers.
Police filed new charges against Reinhart after an Oct. 29 incident at the Cranberry Township district judge’s office. Police said Reinhart was brought to the district judge for a preliminary hearing for the September case, and after the hearing, Reinhart barricaded himself in a holding area.
Police said he also had thrown chairs and other objects at officers and threatened to kill officers throughout the incident.
