Alvin Murchison, Ph.D.
Alvin Murchison, Ph.D., 82, of Evans City died Sunday at Butler Memorial Hospital.
Born Sept. 6, 1927, in New York, N.Y., he was the son of the late Blackwell and Bessie (Friedman) Murchison.
Dr. Murchison attended the Crestview Community Church in Callery.
He received his bachelor's degree from Columbia University in New York and his doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Murchison taught chemistry and general science and was a former president of the school teachers union for the Mars School District.
He was a World War II and Korean War veteran, serving in the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant, in the Coast Guard and in U.S. Merchant Marines.
Dr. Murchison also was the Butler County chess champion.
He is survived by his daughter, Amy M. Mulzet and her husband, John, of Evans City; three grandchildren, Brandon Lee, Sean Mulzet and his wife, Judy, and Melissa Joswiak and her husband, Andrew; a great-grandson, Jake Mulzet; and a nephew, Bruce Amber.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joy S. (Staples) Murchison, who died Sept. 25, 2005; and his sister, Natalie Amber.
