Emergency rescue crews gather information after a two-vehicle crash Wednesday morning left one driver injured on Route 422 near the Big Butler Fairgrounds. The two-vehicle collision happened around 7 a.m.

FRANKLIN TWP — An Alabama man was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital with a broken leg and other injuries after the pickup truck he was driving collided with a tractor-trailer Wednesday morning, on Route 422 near the Big Butler Fairgrounds.

The crash happened about 7 a.m. when the driver of the rig, which was hauling an empty bulk tank, pulled out of the Fairground Market parking lot in Franklin Township, state police said.

John M. Jones, 27, of Laverne was unable to stop his eastbound Dodge Ram truck in time and slammed into the driver's side of the tractor-trailer.

Jones, who works for an unknown pipeline company, according to police, was briefly trapped in his truck. Prospect volunteer firefighters had to use a rescue tool to force open the driver's door and get him out.

He suffered a compound fracture of the right leg and other injuries, authorities said.

A LifeFlight medical helicopter landed on the middle of the highway and flew Jones to Allegheny General Hospital. His condition was not immediately available. Police described his injuries as “moderate.”

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Thomas Jackson Jr., 42, of Pittsburgh, was not injured. He faces a ticket for improperly entering or crossing a road, said Trooper David Wellington.

The crash closed a portion of Route 422 for about an hour.
