Butler’s Redevelopment Authority is looking for a new executive director.

About 10 years ago, the authority hired Perry O’Malley as executive director while the city worked to bring the organization back from the brink of inactivity.

O’Malley also was and still is the executive director of both the Housing Authority of Butler County and the Butler County Redevelopment Authority.

Through the years the city’s authority board has developed projects and plans to help revitalize the downtown and improve the quality of life in the city.

“We’ve revamped the authority board and what it does for the city, and when we started those efforts, Perry O’Malley was the best guy to have lead us through the process,” said Fred Reese, authority chairman, Butler city councilman and owner of the Monroe Hotel.

“But now it’s time that we have someone who is working just on the city’s interests day to day,” Reese said. “If we could keep Perry I would, but he has his other things to look after and its not fair for him to have to split his time by a third here, a third here and a third here, plus late events.”

O’Malley agreed.

“I’m just too busy now, and the city authority has enough projects under way or about to start that they really do need someone who can work exclusively on city business,” he said.

An authority advertisement in the Butler Eagle on Friday stated the authority is looking for someone with a bachelor’s degree in business, real estate, public administration or related field. O’Malley said the ideal candidate would know how to work with both the state and federal governments.

“We (the county housing and county redevelopment staffs) will continue to help with the city authority’s finances through a no- or low-cost contract,” O’Malley said. “We’ll be around to help, but someone needs to be in charge every day.”

Resumes must be submitted no later than May 22 and O’Malley said he hopes to have someone in place by Aug. 1.
