BUTLER TWP — The Butler Area Sewer Authority on Wednesday approved three rights of way and an easement in Butler as part of its storage tank project.

All four properties are along or near Sullivan Run in the West End and will be part of the project to stop sanitary sewer overflows that occur with heavy rains or snow when stormwater infiltrates the sewer lines.

BASA members Jerry Patterson, George Shockey and John Heim approved rights of way with the Butler Redevelopment Authority, the Butler County Housing Authority and property owner Scott Fuller.

They also approved a 20-foot easement in Rotary Park with Butler City Council at a cost of $1.

However, the rights of way will cost a bit more.

The redevelopment authority is selling a 0.3 acre right of way near the Swinging Bridge on the Pullman Park side of Sullivan Run for $5,000 for the construction of a pump station and a sanitary sewer line.

BASA members also approved a 15-foot right of way on Fuller's property from Pillow Street to the pump station. This right of way will be used to bring a water line to the pump station.

That right of way will cost $1,000.

BASA also will buy a 20-foot right of way near Rotary Park from the housing authority for $2,000.

BASA and the state Department of Environmental Protection are working through a consent agreement to make sure the overflow problem ends. The deadline for the project is June 2012, and the entire project is expected to cost $30 million.

Seven holding tanks will be built in the BASA service area to help control raw sewage overflows during rain storms or snow melts.

The tanks will slowly release the water to the treatment plant instead of overwhelming pump stations and manholes.

Two of the tanks will be built on AK Steel property that has been sold to BASA near the intersection of Sullivan Run and Connoquenessing Creek.
