SR School Board to have contested race

Region 2 director for the Slippery Rock School Board, which includes Prospect and Portersville boroughs and Franklin and Muddy Creek townships, will be a contested race in November.

Incumbent board member Matt Pyle with 401 votes defeated challenger Vito Pilosi III with 308 votes for the Republican nomination.

However, Pilosi was cross-filed and won the Democratic nomination, which was uncontested.

He received 197 Democratic votes and 11 Democratic write-in votes were cast. The winner will earn a four-year term on the board.

Coincidentally, Pyle and Pilosi squared off in 2013, both as write-in candidates for a two-year term on the board following a resignation.

Pyle, who has two children who attend Moraine Elementary School, said he was excited to win the nomination.

“I ran quietly through this election. I didn’t have any signs. I basically wanted to run on what I’ve done for two years,” he said.

After getting elected the first time, Pyle got involved with the search committee that recommended the hire of superintendent Alfonso Angelucci. He said his experience in business management was helpful in evaluating candidates.

Now he’d like to see the district build on the foundation it has with its new administration and hopefully increase its enrollment in coming years.

“The sky is the limit,” he said.

In Region 1, Democrat Diana Wolak, who got 176 votes to 32 write-ins, will be uncontested for re-election.

In Region 3, Republican Melissa Allen, who got 284 votes to 52 write-ins, will be uncontested for re-election.
