Meeting Round Up: Saxonburg

The Saxonburg Borough Council at its Tuesday evening meeting:

* Discussed an ordinance requested by the volunteer fire company that would prohibit banners that cross over streets. The fire company told borough leaders that ropes holding the large banners sometimes break and banners fall into traffic. The council and borough manager, Mary Papik, discussed the potential ordinance, saying across-the-street banners would be allowed until the end of the year if an ordinance were passed. Council approved buying brackets for flagpole banners and allowing an across-the-street banner for the Sprankle’s Octoberfest next month, but did not vote on a new ordinance.

* Heard resident Judy Farney report that Constitution Avenue on the north border of the borough is dangerous, due to speeding. She said nearly every driver on the street ignores the 25 mph speed limit, and at times vehicles travel 60 or 70 miles per hour.

* Approved a resolution welcoming German Consul David Gill to the borough for his Thursday visit, and another measure to allow the mayor up to $1,000 to cover any expenses incurred during Gill’s time in the borough.

* Heard Doug Sprankle of Sprankle’s Neighborhood Market invite council members to a “table of honor” at his 2022 Octoberfest from Sept. 9 to 11. Sprankle also reported that his store holds 20 local events per year, buys from 20 local food vendors, and welcomes 7,500 customers per week to his store, compared to the 3,500 weekly customers toward the end of Friedman’s Freshmarkets’ tenure in December 2017. Sprankle’s also boasts the first brew pub inside a grocery store in Pennsylvania history, Sprankle said.

* Heard Aaron Piper, council president, report that no action was planned for the meeting regarding the much-anticipated special events ordinance the borough is considering. Piper said the ordinance will be revealed when council is ready to unveil it.
