A Butler man facing federal charges for firearms violations, after allegedly conducting straw purchases of guns in exchange for heroin, pleaded guilty Wednesday to three charges in the case.

Craig E. Cyphert, 47, pleaded guilty to three counts of violating federal firearms laws before U.S. District Judge Arthur J. Schwab. Prosecutors say Cyphert possessed seven firearms between 2011 and 2016 and was “an unlawful drug user or drug addict,” which makes “possessing any firearm in or affecting commerce” a crime.

Prosecutors also said, in a news release, that Cyphert made false statements from 2014 to 2016, when he acquired six of those firearms and told a gun dealer that he was purchasing them for himself.

In fact, prosecutors say, Cyphert was purchasing the weapons for another person in exchange for heroin, crack cocaine and cash.

Schwab scheduled Cyphert’s sentencing for Jan. 10. He faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both, on each count.
