BCC hosting West Penn Amateur
PENN TWP — Golf history is coming to the Butler Country Club next week.
The 122nd edition of the WPGA Amateur Championship, a 54-hole event, takes place on the golf course Monday and Tuesday. It will be the first time BCC has hosted the tournament since 2013.
“We love coming to Butler. That is such an outstanding course,” WPGA Executive Director Terry Teasdale said. “We’ve had our amateur tournament at a number of different places through the years, but we’re looking to settle into a 10-course rotation and want Butler to be a part of that.
“There’s so much history with the Amateur, so many great champions. We can start with Arnold Palmer.”
Palmer won the West Penn Amateur four consecutive years, from 1949 through 1952. Bob Reilly won it four straight years (1960-63) as did Nathan Smith (2007-10). Smith is in the 78-golfer field next week.
Sean Knapp of Oakmont — a former St. Jude Golf Club member — is the only golfer to win the West Penn Amateur six straight years. He did so from 1998 through 2003. Knapp — who won the Amateur at Butler Country Club in 2001 — is in the field this year as well. Butler County golf legend Jim Simons won the 1969 Amateur at Edgewood Country Club.
“What’s great about this tournament is you have to be from Western Pennsylvania to play in it,” Teasdale said. “It showcases the top amateur golf talent in this region.”
Golfers qualify for the West Penn Amateur either through exemption or by getting through one of three qualifying tournaments earlier this season. Those were hosted by the Country Club of Meadville, Latrobe Elks Country Club and Winder Country Club in Salix.
“We are always excited about landing major events like this,” Butler Country Club assistant pro Barry Donehue said. “We hosted a U.S. Open qualifier this year and now this. The best players around here are coming to play our course.”
The field includes Slippery Rock High School golf standout Jacob Wolak, Butler graduate Jon Pratkanis, Parker resident Mike Marron, Knapp and Smith.
Tanner Johnson of Venetia won last year’s West Penn Amateur at Indiana Country Club. He is in this year’s field as well. So is David Brown of Pittsburgh, who defeated Bo Lustig of Belle Vernon on the third hole of a playoff in 2013 at BCC.
“This is the fourth time we’ve gotten the West Penn Amateur and it’s our honor to host it,” BCC golf professional John Brautigam said. “We always want everybody involved to have a great experience here.”
John Birmingham came away with the trophy at BCC in 1968, the first time Butler hosted the tournament.
“The golfers play 36 holes on Monday,” Teasdale said. “Only the best 32 scores, plus ties, come back to play on Tuesday.”
The WPGA was founded in 1899. The West Penn Amateur has been played every year beginning with that one, except for 1917-18. It was not played those years because of the war. Schenley Park hosted the inaugural Amateur.
