Zelienople won't have to pay to move utility line 2nd time
ZELIENOPLE — The borough will not be forced to pay for moving a utility line a second time for a state project.
Borough council voted Monday to amend a resolution authorizing a cost sharing request with the state Department of Transportation to move a water line for the Route 68 bridge project for a second time.
The borough originally moved the water line that runs along the north side of the bridge about four feet away.
However after another inspection by PennDOT, it was found out that the water needed to be relocated again by 10 more feet.
“It was just an oversight on the department,” public works director Chad Garland said. “PennDOT agreed to incorporate the contract into their portion so there will be no out-of-pocket expenses for the borough.”
The borough had to relocate the water line as part of its agreement with PennDOT for the project, which started March 14.
Under the first relocation, the borough and PennDOT split the cost.
Costs for relocating the water line a second time were not available upon request. However borough officials said it is a “significant” cost.
Garland said moving the water line a second time will not delay the project, scheduled for a mid-July completion.
An extended walkway also is planned for the bridge near the old Zelienople Volunteer Fire Department building on West Beaver Street.
That work is being done by Mekis Construction.
