Evelyn Phillips Borden

Evelyn Phillips Borden, 91, of Cranberry Township, formerly of Woodland Hills, Calif., passed away peacefully Saturday at the Sherwood Oaks.

She was born as Mildred Evelyn Phillips on Sept. 8, 1925, in Hickory, Pa., the first child of David McCarrell and Janet White Phillips and the first grandchild of Robert and Elizabeth Spears Phillips. Her maternal grandparents were William G. and Alphretta Lyle White.

Evelyn was baptized in the Mt. Prospect Presbyterian Church by the Rev. James Morledge. She attended Cross Creek Township and Hickory elementary schools and graduated from Hickory High School in 1943.

In 1950, she moved to Los Angeles, Calif., where she worked in the office of the president of Richfield Oil Corp. She married Stanley Mathew Borden on June 30, 1951. They lived in Woodland Hills, Calif., where their four sons, Thomas Mathew, Robert Edward, Ronald Philip and Richard Stanley were born and raised.

She attended college as a mature student and graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1975 and master's degree in 1978 in English and secondary education from California State University Northridge (CSUN). She taught one year at Kennedy High School in Granada Hills, Calif., and eight years at Holy Martyrs Ferrahian High School in Encino, Calif.

Evelyn was a charter member of the Woodland Hills Junior Woman's Club, worked in the PTA at the elementary and junior high schools her sons attended and later became active in the Woodland Hills Woman's Club.

Stanley Borden died Feb. 18, 2000. In 2010, Evelyn moved back to her native state and lived at Sherwood Oaks Retirement Community in Cranberry Township.

She was a member of the Perry Highway Lutheran Church in Wexford, where she was chair of the Ink Cartridge Recycling project with funds received going to assist in social outreach programs.

In addition to her four sons, she is survived by a stepson, Frank W. Borden and his wife, Raquel, and their son, Frankie, of San Pedro, Calif.; her daughter-in-law, Felicia Borden; her grandsons, Theodore and Derek of Cranberry Township and Paul Borden of Salt Lake City, Utah; her sister-in-law, Ann Wagner Phillips; her stepgranddaughter, Janice Lynn Erickson; her stepgrandson, Michael Borden and his family; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her husband, Evelyn was predeceased by her brothers, William Arthur and Joseph Reed Phillips; and her stepgranddaughter, Elaine Ann Borden.

BORDEN — Family and friends of Evelyn Phillips Borden will be received on Saturday, May 13, 2017, from 2 p.m. until the time of a celebration of life ceremony at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Boylan-Glenn-Kildoo Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 130 Wisconsin Ave., Cranberry Township, with the Rev. Dennis J. Ferguson officiating.Evelyn will be laid to rest at the Oakwood Memorial Park in Chatsworth, Calif.If desired, memorial contributions may be made in Evelyn's honor to the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) Historical Society Museum, 1355 N. Cahuenga Blvd., Hollywood, CA 90028, designated for the restoration of the Ralph J.
