FirstEnergy urges caution when celebrating with foil balloons
FirstEnergy is reminding the public to be cautious of potential electrical hazards associated with popular outdoor activities, like parades, barbecues and swimming.
While foil balloons and fireworks are two of the most common ways to celebrate Independence Day, they can create safety issues and cause major damage to electric systems when used near power lines or electrical equipment, according to a Thursday news release from FirstEnergy.
Foil balloons have caused many power outages because their metallic coating conducts electricity when they drift into power lines or electrical equipment. In Western Pennsylvania, foil balloons have caused 10 power outages this year, according to the news release.
Enjoying the holiday weekend responsibly will not only keep you safe, but can also help prevent disruptions to electric service while many people rely on air conditioning to stay cool and comfortable.
