Clair D. Matson, 94, of Butler died Sunday at Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born Nov. 25, 1913, in Butler, he was the son of Harry and Minnie Shockey Matson.

He was a retired custodian at Butler County Community College, and he also was retired from the Wheel Works of Butler Armco, where he was employed for 33 years.

He was a veteran of the Army; he served in the 12th Armored Division in World War II.

He was a member of the VFW Post 249, and was a life member of the South Butler Volunteer Fire Department.

He is survived by four sons, Bernard "Buck" Birckbichler and his wife, Kathy, of Titusville, William Birckbichler and his wife, Willa, of Ohio, Dennis Matson and his wife, Betty, of Butler, and Gary Matson and his wife, Eirlys, of Butler; three daughters, Mrs. Bernard (Jane) Schaffner of Meadville, Mrs. Thomas (Mary) Horstman of Butler, and Mrs. Bruce (Carroll) Hadley of South Carolina; a sister, Mrs. Eleanor Huff of Butler; 23 grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren; a number of great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Taylor Matson, who died in 2004; three brothers; a sister; a grandson; and a great-great-granddaughter.

<B>MATSON</B>— Friends of Clair D. Matson, who died Sunday, July 20, 2008, will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at <B>Martin Funeral Home</B>, 429 Center Ave., Butler.Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Pastor Jeff Miller of North Street Christian Church officiating.Burial will be in Butler County Memorial Park.Information at www.martinfh.net.
