A Karns City man charged with growing marijuana at his home was sentenced to the county Intermediate Punishment program in Butler County Court on Thursday.

Donald W. Selfridge, 53, was sentenced to 24 months of the program, with the first 90 days on house arrest and electronic monitoring, by Judge Timothy McCune.

He also was ordered to pay a $250 fine, undergo any recommended counseling and submit 50 hours of community service, after previously pleading guilty to felony possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance on Sept. 6.

Selfridge was initially charged with felony possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and misdemeanor charges of possession of a controlled substance, drug paraphernalia and possession of a small amount of marijuana after an incident at his home on Butternut Road, Fairview Township, on April 29, 2015.

The possession of a controlled substance charge was later withdrawn at the district judge level and the remaining charges were dismissed as part of the plea.

State police charged him after a “knock and talk” investigation led troopers with the police vice unit to the home.

Police said Selfridge let officers into the home, which smelled of marijuana, and a consent search subsequently turned up five marijuana plants, each about two feet tall, in a back bedroom that was being used as a suspected grow room, according to court documents.

Police said they found in the bathroom several items “associated with the manufacturing of marijuana” and on the kitchen counter a small amount of marijuana as well as marijuana pipes and rolling paper.

Following arraignment, he was released on his own recognizance.
